Take a moment and picture this – the clock strikes 5 and you get up from your desk, push your chair in and saunter over to the bathroom to examine your makeup after a long, tedious day at the office. Your friends are waiting at the bar downstairs, cocktails have been ordered and your phone is ringing. But as you step in front of the mirror your face fills with horror as you glance up and come face to face with makeup meltdown. There isn’t time to rescue your messed up foundation so you’re forced to join your friends with day-old makeup. Cringe! Thank goodness someone was smart enough (probably a makeup-wearing woman) to invent a product to help prolong your makeup – let’s turn the spotlight onto makeup setting/fixer sprays.
Essence Keep it Perfect! Make-up Fixing Spray – R64.95 at Dis-Chem. If you’re on a budget and you’re looking to dip your toes into ‘setting spray’ waters than this option from Essence will welcome you with open arms. The cute packaging, the travel-friendly size and the price all contribute to a winning product. But, inevitably, the question on your lips is ‘Does it actually compare to the more expensive brands?’. The mist sprays evenly, it has a subtle scent and feels fresh against your skin. You can expect this fixing spray to extend the wear-time of your makeup by a couple of hours. It isn’t heavy duty, but it does the job. Well done, Essence!
MAC Prep + Prime Fix + – R250 at MAC counters/website. If you’re familiar with MAC cosmetics (um, who isn’t?) then you’ll have definitely tried or have a friend who swears by the MAC Fix+ finishing spray. I believe that there are two camps when it comes to this product. There’s the faction who believe the MAC Fix+ is essentially an overpriced 100ml bottle of water, and then there’s the clique who come hell or high water, will defend this fixing spray till the end of time. I fall somewhere in the middle. I’m sure my torch will be snuffed and I’ll be voted off the (beauty blogger) island for saying this, but I believe that MAC Fix+ is one of those cult products where people buy into the hype and end up walking away feeling unsatisfied and disappointed.
Okay, let’s all calm down and have a rational discussion. Yes, this ‘water’ is packed full of skin-loving vitamins and minerals and infused with a blend of green tea, chamomile and cucumber, but does it actually do anything to improve the longevity of your makeup? I don’t think it does. But in MAC’s defence it isn’t really advertised as a setting spray, is it? Fix+ is meant to ‘fix’ your makeup when you’ve applied powder with a heavy hand and you’re left with the dreaded chalk face. It instantly helps bind all the products together to create that dewy look we all desire.
HEAN High Definition Makeup Fixer Spray – R290 on glamorecosmetics.co.za. There are times when you really need your makeup to stay in place. If you’ve had your bridal makeup done, you wouldn’t want it melting off your face halfway through the wedding toasts, would you? In that case the HEAN makeup fixer spray might be perfect for you. It provides a lightweight and invisible protective film over your makeup, which slightly mattifies your skin and keeps your makeup looking freshly applied. I gave the HEAN fixer spray a 9-hour trial and I can happily report back that my makeup stayed perfectly in place. This setting spray is described as a “facial mist spray”, however, due to the alcohol content it feels more like a hairspray against your skin and although the scent is slightly off-putting, it only lasts for a few seconds before dissipating. Overall, I can say I’m pretty impressed.
Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray – R450 at Urban Decay store in Sandton City. If you’re anything like me then you spend a fair amount of time perfecting your full face of makeup and the last thing you want is to see your hard work slipping off your face by the end of the day. The name of this Urban Decay setting spray says it all – your makeup will stay put all night, even after hours on the dance floor or um, any other floors. No melting, fading or settling into fine lines – your look will be on lockdown (as Urban Decay puts it). The microfine mist feels completely weightless and offers your makeup heavy-duty staying power.
According to Urban Decay, the ‘All Nighter’ is developed in an exclusive partnership with SKINDINAVIA, this groundbreaking, clinically tested formula is suitable for ALL skin types and features patented Temperature Control Technology. Your makeup will look better and last longer, even through hot and humid weather or cold and windy conditions. This isn’t a fair-weather friend. No siree! Also, zero stickiness and zilch tightness. Bonus. If I’m heading out the door, unsure of what time I’ll be home, I always make sure to spritz ‘All Nighter’ onto my face so I can confidently leave the house knowing that my makeup will still be in the same place when I finally return. **please note the photo is of the travel size, but the store is only selling full-size 120ml bottles for R450**
