When you hear the word “HD – High Definition” I think most of us think about big screen TV’s that show up every single pore and wrinkle. It’s actually quite frightening. But when you hear that word being used to describe a lip product then I think it evokes a completely different set of emotions. Don’t you agree? I imagine bright, vivid colours bursting off my lips and after trying out the Revlon Ultra HD lipsticks and lip lacquers I was completely justified in my way of thinking. These HD lipsticks and lacquers have a wonderful way of clinging to your lips and offering a delicious and juicy wash of colour. I know these have been on the shelf for a few months already but I feel like some of you might only be purchasing these now and I’ve included some shades that are perfect for Winter.
Revlon describes their HD lipsticks as “Revolutionary wax-free gel technology for true color clarity in one smooth swipe. Available in 20 high-definition shades“. Yes, I completely agree Revlon. The colours are true to what the packaging displays. The three shades I have are completely opaque, super smooth and extremely vibrant. Iris (burgundy, raspberry-plum), Azalea (bright, berry pink) and Petunia (bold berry-wine). These silky HD lipsticks kind of remind me of heavily pigmented lip balms/butters – a lightweight, non-sticky, non-waxy formula that feels luxurious on my lips. Also, did I mention that these lipsticks have quite the delectable scent – creamy and fruity with a hint of vanilla. I’m completely in love with them. One swipe of the bullet and your lips are covered in a fully pigmented lick of colour. The colour seems to last for a pretty decent amount of time (about 2 hours) in comparison to other lipsticks I’ve used before. But please also consider the fact that I’m an avid lip licker so generally lipsticks don’t last all that long on me. This also explains why I always have dry lips. Eeurgh!
So as much as I can rave about the formula and beautiful shades I feel it’s only fair for me to let you guys know that I have a love/hate relationship with the packaging. The clear caps and silver tubes look very sleek and clean but the problem I have is that the lipsticks are very soft in texture and they don’t swivel all the way down which means that on more than one occasion I’ve ‘chipped’ the lipstick while putting the cap back on. Also the flat, broad tip makes application a bit difficult and when your lips are thin like mine you end up applying colour to your skin as well as your mouth. Not a good look.
On the other side of things, the HD lip lacquers are an intense swirl of colour, gloss and magic. A thick, completely non-sticky formula that offers intense pigment in the most stunning shades. I was lucky enough to receive ‘Pink Ruby’ which is a very special shade. A seriously opaque bright pink fuchsia with blue iridescent sparkles. Ultra glossy, thick and luxurious. I might not be completely sold on the lipstick packaging but the lacquers more than make up for that. My inner magpie is screaming with glee at the crystal-topped lids and my beauty-loving self is sold on the nifty brush applicator. These lush lacquers feel lightweight on your lips and surprisingly seem to last longer than the lipsticks.
While the lipsticks are all named after flowers these glossy girls are named after gemstones. Just another reason to love these lippies. There are 15 high-definition shades available and I’m looking forward to wearing Carnelian this Autumn/Winter. It’s the absolute perfect deep burgundy gloss for the colder months. It’s perfectly opaque and gives your lips that dark, moody look that I love to sport during Winter.
If you’ve made it this far then congratulations and thanks for reading. If you want to get your hands on these lipsticks and lacquers then try Dis-Chem, Clicks, Foschini & Truworths. Both are selling for R145. Not bad, not bad at all. Now tell me something. Which shade is your favourite?
