I must admit that when Bourjois were exclusively available in Edgars stores I never really bothered looking at their stand. This had nothing to do with the actual products themselves, but rather with my own preconceived ideas about the prices of the makeup brands that are stocked at Edgars. Brands like Chanel, Bobbi Brown, Yves Saint Laurent, Lancome & Dior. You get the idea? But when French brand Bourjois moved over to Clicks, which is unashamedly my favourite shop to buy makeup, I immediately took notice of the pretty stands. I’ve used their blush pots and mascara’s and now recently tried their nail polishes and lipsticks. This brand is affordable and their products are absolutely gorgeous. Bourjois recently added some new products to their range and I was lucky enough to try out two of them.
When it comes to Spring and Summertime nail colours I tend to gravitate towards corals, soft pinks, bright whites and minty greens. So basically this glossy green is right up my alley. The So Laque Glossy range is enriched with vinyl for an ultra-glossy shine, and as you can see by these photos of my (dry) nails there is definitely a high-shine finish. They almost look like gel polish to me. These pics are taken with no top coat, so the shine you’re seeing is all from the polish itself. Okay, so I’ve proven that their first claim is true, but what about their second claim that promises 10 chip-free days. I really want to say that they lasted on my nails for that long, but they didn’t. I will start off my saying that I type on my keyboard a lot so most polishes don’t make it past day 2 without a chip. However, this So Laque Glossy one made it up to 4 days without a single chip. But by day 5 I had two chips on my pointer fingers. In my book this hands down (‘scuse the pun) wins the award for longest-wearing nail polish.
The polish itself has a smooth consistency and the brush might be small, but the polish still glides on evenly and effortlessly. A few notable things worth mentioning are that the colour pulls more towards the green side in daylight/natural light but leans more on the minty side indoors. You need 3-4 thin coats to achieve an opaque look and if you let each thin coat dry before applying the next one then the drying time is relatively fast. You absolutely need to use a base and top coat with this polish otherwise you will experience a bit of bubbling and yellowing/staining.
All Bourjois nail polishes are formulated without nasty ingredients like Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Acetone and Phthalate. The So Laque Glossy range is available in 8 shades and sell for R96 at selected Clicks stores. I’m definitely going to go get the ‘ Peach & Love’ shade which ironically is the colour I was originally given before I swapped it for this minty shade.
As you get older you definitely notice that your tastes and opinions change. One thing I can tell you is that 6 months ago I would never in a million years have worn a shade this bold or bright or even this matte. But I’ve recently decided to embrace darker shades and not be so concerned with my usual nonsense, which is that someone with thin lips shouldn’t wear such eye-catching colours. Yes, it’s true that darker colours will make small looks look smaller. But I’ve come to realise that my thin lips and small mouth are only going to get smaller as I get older so I might as well rock these bright shades while I still can. I mean I’m 31 this year so I’m almost a granny! 😉 Besides the super bright colour, the second thing that caught my attention was the velvety smooth consistency – hence the name. These ‘Rouge Edition Velvet’ lipsticks are highly pigmented and leave you with an almost powdery matte finish. These are not your average ‘apply-while-driving’ type lippes. These are incredibly pigmented and slightly liquid so you need to pay attention when applying these with the lipgloss-like applicator or you might end up looking like a half-blind clown.
The colour longevity of these beauties is superb. I mean they really, really last, almost like a stain. The colour does transfer but it stays mostly in place for a surprisingly long time. I find the formula to be non-drying, however if you have very dry lips then these will sit in the cracks and possibly make your dry lips look even drier. They feel very silky and light on my lips and almost like I’m not wearing anything. My favourite way to wear this bold, but very flattering fuchsia shade (Pink Pong) is with a slick of black eyeliner and lashings of mascara. All 6 available shades (R126 each) are vivid and definitely make a statement which is exactly what I’m planning on doing this Spring.
