New in From Benefit

If healthy, clear skin is a dream come true then shiny, enlarged pores can definitely be considered a waking nightmare. But if the former eludes you then never fear because that’s where these two new offerings from Benefit step in. I’ve been testing out their newly launched The POREfessional  ‘Matte Rescue’ and ‘Instant Wipeout Masks’ and I’m here to share the good, the bad and the ugly.

The POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I have no clue who ‘Matt’ is, but he is more than willing to help rescue your skin. In fact, from now on I’m going to call this little tube Matt. The name suits him. Okay, jokes aside this mattifying gel has been hailed (by Benefit) as a #nofilter filter. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started using this product. I’ve been a longtime fan of their original ‘The POREfessional face primer’ and when I laid eyes on this sparkly, adorably packaged tube of newness I was left feeling mystified. Is it a primer? Is it a moisturiser? It’s actually both. Sorta. A hybrid, if we must label it. You apply this water-based gel after cleansing, and before you apply the silicone-based POREfessional primer. The biggest difference between the super mattifying gel and the silky primer is that the former melts into your skin while the latter sits on top of your skin and temporarily fills in your pores. The POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel is your secret weapon against pores. Matt feels lightweight on your skin, absorbs excess sebum and leaves you with an instantly shine-free face.

At this point, you might be asking what’s so special about Matt? Well, diamonds are a girl’s best friend and Matt comes bearing gifts. The gel contains diamond powder known for its soft-focus pore-blurring effect. I like that this product mattifies but doesn’t dry out my skin in the drier areas. It does a superb job of sucking up oil on my T-zone and gives my makeup a smoother appearance while holding my foundation/powder in place for a wee bit longer. But the pertinent question remains – is it worth R395? That’s a tough question for several reasons. We all have different skin concerns and different needs. I don’t have overly oily skin so I don’t necessarily fall into their ‘ideal target market’. As much as I like the consistency and feel of this product I’ll probably just keep using the Benefit POREfessional primer. I don’t need both. Perhaps Matt just hasn’t won my heart yet. Sorry, Matt – it’s me, not you. But with that being said this product does work and offers you a shine-free canvas. So, can you get away with just one of them? I think you can.

The POREfessional Instant Wipeout Masks

If it feels like your pores are narcissistic and trying to take over your whole face then these new wipeout masks might be a godsend. If your problem area is your forehead, cheeks, nose or chin it doesn’t matter because these dual-sided face masks will fit anywhere on your face. But I’ve only used them on my pesky pores – those flanking my nose. The specially textured fabric woven from cottony fibers helps exfoliate and remove pore impurities. If your pores are clogged it inevitably leads to breakouts, enlarged pores, and blackheads. Seriously? Who has time for that?

The POREfessional ‘briefcase’ offers you eight individually packaged masks. The best part for the eternally young at heart, like myself, is the giant blue button that says ‘PRESS’. Come on, who can resist not pushing that? Once you press the button it immerses the sheet mask into a serum containing pore-busting mushroom-extract.

The wipeout mask doesn’t feel like anything on your skin. However, it does have a fairly strong ‘alcohol-based’ scent that might be off-putting to some. After 10 minutes I definitely noticed that my nose and surrounding skin was smoother and had that ‘squeaky clean’ appearance to it. But at the hefty price of R405 I have to admit that this charming little briefcase won’t find its way back into my shopping cart.

You can purchase Benefit products at selected Edgars stores or on the Red Square website.
