1. Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara
This budget beauty find first made an appearance on my “My Current Favourite Makeup Products” post last year. It’s been a firm favourite since taking up residence inside my makeup bag. This is the blackest black mascara in my ‘collection’. If you’re a fan of thick, full, fluttery lashes then this might be right up your alley. The formula is wet, but dries quickly and does a bang up job of lengthening and curling lashes. At any given time on average I’ll have about three tubes open, but for the past three months I’ve found myself mostly reaching for this one. Check out the post mentioned above for photos and more info. R159.95 at Foschini.
2. Urban Decay Vice Lipstick
These little ‘bullets of beauty’ need little to no introduction. They’ve featured many times on my social media and there’s a very ‘delicious’ little blog post showcasing these beauties in all their glory. The Urban Decay Vice Lipstick comes in a massive lineup of 100 glorious shades and six indulgent finishes, but my favourite is undeniably the ‘cream’ finish – creamy, luxurious and packed with pigment. These lipsticks glide on smoothly, without dragging on lips or bleeding. The formula is infused with a tasty blend of aloe vera, jojoba, avocado and babassu oils to nourish and soften your lips while offering you a selection of bold brights, deep darks, natural nudes and sexy shades. I’ll take one of each, thank you very much. R230 at Urban Decay in Sandton and Eastgate and online.
3. Elizabeth Arden Prevage Foundation
When it comes to makeup products I think foundation is the hardest working of the bunch. The #GirlBoss of your makeup bag, if you will. A lot is expected of you when you’re a foundation. You need to apply smoothly, offer coverage, minimise lines and brighten up complexions without looking like a thick mask. Gah, that’s a tall order. I have old favourites which suddenly don’t perform the way they used to. It’s a tough life being a foundation. But last year I was introduced to a lovely new addition to my makeup collection – the ‘Elizabeth Arden Prevage Anti-Aging Foundation’. It feels beautifully lightweight on your skin while offering considerable coverage. It gives my skin a luminous finish and my skin looks like my own skin but a zillion times better, of course. The formula is hydrating, illuminating and skin-perfecting – a trifecta of awesomeness. This one is best suited to normal to dry skins and available in 8 shades. R650 at Elizabeth Arden counters.
4. Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush
If you’re looking to flawlessly apply and buff your liquid foundation then look no further than this optical blurring brush from cult brand, Urban Decay. Fun fact? Like all their brushes, it’s totally vegan! The Urban Decay cruelty-free brushes are 100% animal-friendly. I love the sound of that. The bristles are soft, but not so soft that you’re unable to distribute foundation over your skin. The brush head is dense and doesn’t suck up product like a thirsty three-year-old. Without fail, my foundation is smooth, streak-free, buffed and slightly ‘blurred’ time after time. I went as far as giving away all (well, almost) my other foundation brushes at the start of 2017. When it comes to bath time this brush doesn’t shed, but it does take a bit of elbow grease to get it clean. Next on my shopping list is the Urban Decay Iconic Eyeshadow Brush. *wink wink*. 5. Benefit Ka-Brow!
A quick reminder for 2017 – don’t let anybody with bad eyebrows tell you s*** about life. In my opinion, a face isn’t finished until your eyebrows have been ‘filled in’. Eyebrows frame your face and a stronger brow just completes a makeup look. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. The Ka-Brow! cream-gel formulation applies easily with the cap-turn-brush applicator. The shade I have (#4) is perfect for my medium-to-dark brown hair and the result is a beautifully natural look. The formula is very workable and completely buildable. I’ve used this almost every day since it arrived on my beauty desk. R335 at Red Square/selected Edgars stores.
